Why Grow Wild?

Wellbeing & Skills

The benefits of time in nature, learning skills and connecting with people are well evidenced. Ecotherapy, Care Farms and Social Prescribing are now common in health services across England.

Grow Wild's primary mission is to provide space for people to access these therapeutic activities and learn green skills.

We work with multiple partners across a broad spectrum of society. On Wednesdays' we work with adults who have dementia/brain injuries and on Friday’s young adults (16-30) who have additional needs (autism, down’s syndrome, learning difficulties) are in care or are in a period of mental ill health.

We also support students from Askham Bryan College and offer an education service to the York Homeschooling community.

Sustainable Local Food

We are passionate about permaculture and food forest methods of growing. We are reducing the distance food travels using sustainable, no spray, organic methods.

Fruits and vegetables contain the most nutrients when they are first picked and therefore local food is not just tastier, it's healthier too!

Most of the food we grow is shared with our volunteers or sold to Beetle Bank Farm kitchen.

We also have a partnership with York Food Bank to provide their service users with fresh produce during the growing season.

Rewilding for Nature

At Grow Wild York, we are as passionate about nature as we are about people. That is why we don't use pesticides and we aim to create a haven for wildlife as well as people.

We are transforming unproductive farmland, with little nature, into thriving habitats and have plans to create a Woodmeadow over the next few years.

So far we have created a wildlife pond, hedgerows and orchards and provided plenty of plants for pollinators.

Dragonflies, hedgehogs, frogs, grasshoppers and plenty of birdlife are becoming more abundant across the paddocks.
